GEAR | Rite in the Rain

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for things like space pens. Sure, I probably won't have to write something down in an anti-gravity environment, but If I find myself needing to take notes while floating at zero-g, I want go be prepared. With that in mind, I recently purchased an All-Weather Reporter's Notebook No. 148 ($5) from the storied company Rite in the Rain. Does it make sense given I am surrounded by screens in drought-ridden L.A.? No. Do I love it? Yes. But what's more is it really works, and I actually got to experience that while taking notes for a story while fishing the Snake River in Wyoming last week. The notepad got wet, and the water wicked. It was sweet.

I'm in Portland, OR for the weekend and although I don't have much free time, I'd love any recs you guys have for PDX!

Try the Montage for mac'n cheese. Of course, Powell's. The food trucks are great. Or you could just head to the coast.

Broder (or Broder Nord) for the best Scandinavian brunch. Blossoming Lotus for seriously delicious vegan food (that attracts swarms of meat eaters). Get lost in Powell's. Try Salt & Straw's crazy ice cream flavors. Head to the beach or the Gorge for a day.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend in my hometown!

Sweedeedee is the best, BEST place for breakfast or lunch. Plus you can pop next door and get a mix tape at Mississippi Records :)
If time permits, a jaunt to the Gorge for a swim or a hike is always a treat. Enjoy!

For shopping, you probably already know about Wildfang for the ultimate in tomboy style... Definitely check it out! Also Yo Vintage is super fun and the ladies who work there are delightful. And there are lots of other neat shops around it, like Poler and Tanner Goods. Frances May is close by too!

What are you up to in Portland? I hope you have a great time, it's a beautiful city! I have so many more recommendations for you if you're here for a while. Glad to hear you're heading out to the gorge. Enjoy!!

Right next to Powell's is the new Union Way shopping strip that has very tomboy-ish lovely shops. Boxer Ramen is right there and is AWESOME. Clyde Common for dinner, Cyril's Wine bar, Rum Club, Ava Gene's, and OX are some of my faves.

House Spirits Distillery tasting room! Their Westward Whiskey is among the smoothest I have ever sipped.

Multnomah Whiskey Library or Southland Whiskey Kitchen. Can't go wrong with either one.

I'm bummed no one commented on Rite in the Rain! As a fish biologist, I've been using these books for years, ever since my first job working in marshes with red wing blackbirds. I dropped the note book in a three feet of swamp, pulled it out and wiped the pond weeds off, and kept taking field notes. Plus, the bright yellow color cheers up any grey day.
