SCENE | Victory Press Pop-Up at Space 15 Twenty


Brooklyn-based Victory Press has traversed the country to pop up in Hollywood's Space 15 Twenty for a few months. They opened softly today but are planning an official opening bash for Saturday night! Their pop-up is one of the best I've seen—there's plenty of their 80s and 90s inspired outdoor and surf apparel on offer—from hats and tees to shorts and anoraks, plus a new collaboration tie-dyed backpack they created with Buck Products out of Montana, also killer ceramics, accessories, and a vintage surf rat corner that is out-of-control-good, including this hat. Space 15 Twenty in LA and Space Ninety Eight in NY are both examples of Urban Outfitters trying to capitalize on a niche market of people who would otherwise make a conscious decision not to shop at large chain shops such as Urban Outfitters. they are in essence taking the aesthetic of a small business that works with small lines and ripping it. i can't get behind this and i encourage everyone to do some thinking as to whether you want to encourage, promote, and support an Urban Outfitters offshoot or if you would prefer to support the truly small businesses and people that Urban "gets inspiration" from.

I hear what you're saying, but I think it's a bit extreme to not support a small locally-made label/retailer just because they are popping-up in an outdoor mall concepted by UO.

Hi Lizzie,
I agree with the first commenter... In response to your comment on extremity, I don't think it's extreme or that I am not supporting the small folks by choosing not to shop at UO concept shops which are preying on the marketability of small labels. I think it is totally possible to support those small locally/made labels and retailers in other venues that are not owned by shady mega-chains.

heyyyy woooah! We have two employees, Jon and myself (well, three if you count our dog jasper). If we're not "truly (a) small business" I'm not sure what is! We do our best to support local artists and sewers by making everything right in NYC. We were offered a beautiful space (that wouldn't hurt our bottom line) that is owned by Urban Outfitters to showcase what we are doing in a different city & we said YES, Thank you! If you want to come by, Jon and I will be the people here working at the shop. We'd love to talk more about this. x Jess
