GEAR | Mom Cars

I was talking to a friend who is expecting and was lamenting the idea of caving into a "mom car"—as she listed off the ultra-safe, un-sporty, spacious vehicle options I wondered about mom cars of the past. Were they always so...unsexy? Turns out maybe not. After a little searching of the words mom and car I found a few mamas that liked to go vroom vroom. As for the safety element: no comment. As a child of the 70's my mom had her fair share of Grand Wagoneers but summer was always MG time--always red, always with wire wheels. Being the smallest I rode behind her seat, on the "shelf" meant to store the canvas top. Now as a 67 year old grandmother, she still drives her most recent (restored 17 years ago) every summer.

I'm hoping to become a mom soon, but there is no way I'm giving up my 1971 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40. I've wanted that truck much longer than I've wanted children. It seems appropriate to comment about it here, because it is the ultimate tomboy car!
