The Anti-Black Friday | Patagonia Worn Wear

When I visited the Patagonia HQ last year I felt a profound sense of tension. On the one hand Patagonia is a business. On the other hand, they have a deep-rooted philosophy that discourages over-consumption and waste. It's an interesting and tough position to be in, but I really believe that what they're doing is authentic.

Today, of course, is a shopping frenzy across the nation, but true-to-form Patagonia is trying to turn Black Friday on its head. The Ventura, California-based company launched a short film called Worn Wear that explores the quality of the things we own and the lives we live by featuring Patagonia customers and their gear that has stood the test of time—it's not only inspiring, but a great antidote to all the retail craziness.

Patagonia is asking us to celebrate the stuff we already own instead of buying something new. And in addition to the Worn Wear film (trailer above), they've partnered with iFixit, a new repair program that will co-publish a series of free repair guides for Patagonia clothing. In addition, on Black Friday, you can head into Patagonia stores and get help fixing an old Patagonia and sample the new Patagonia x New Belgium beernot a bad deal

Thanks for this. I have a pair of their snow bibs that need a new snap. On a side note I wore my wicked awesome slippers out of the house this morning and only regretted it a little bit.

I saw this and I was excited because I have a windbreaker with a small tear, but when I looked into it I noticed that it's only at 15 of their stores. Hardly a strong commitment. More like a show in their in a select few high profile east and west coast stores.
Besides, I stopped buying Patagonia when they moved most of their production to China.
Black Friday has become a thing in the UK too - where it makes absolutely no sense as we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. It's just another marketing gimmick. Hooray then for brands like Patagonia.

Hey Tomboy Style! Great post about the Worn Wear line! I recently took a stroll through the Patagonia HQ myself and love the vibe and values of the company!

I also love the blog and reference it a bit in my blog, at
followthetrailonward.blogspot.com!

Happy posting!

I lived in Ventura for a little bit, and look deeper into this company (family) and see their marketing and product is surface level self promotion. Most of the goods are irresponsibly made in china out of synthetics while they promote a low "footprint". It wasn't an anti-black friday either. I went and saw the 30 min "movie" (advertisement)at Patagonia on Black Friday and there was the full gimmicks, 5 piece band, givaways and discounts abound, people packed in buying overpriced made in china junk. Why do Yuppies want to pretend they are Hippies?
