UNIFORM | Nike Vortex

The Nike Vortex may be one of the last points on the 20th century sneaker design timeline that has retained a timeless and classic appeal. I think its sneaker peer group would consist of Chuck Taylors and Jack Purcells, Rod Lavers and Stan Smiths, and dozen others. But the Vortex wasn't designed until 1985 (13 years after the Nike Cortez); and despite their birth year being smack in the middle of one of fashion's most recognizable decades, they don't scream "the 80s" to me. What else designed in 1985 could you say the same for? And although I love those neon Nike Vortexes that resurfaced a few years ago, I think Daryl Hannah shows us how good they can look in neutrals.

Prices and color option vary from retailer to retailer, but mostly they're listed in men's sizes. I've found them available at Urban Outfitters, Zappos, 6PM, Nordstrom and through Nike.

Perfect is right.

I love the Vortex, although I'm quite sure Darryl Hannah is wearing the Cortez. Unless the Vortex looked much like the Cortez in its original design.

@Emily I was sure it was the Cortez too at first, but the Cortez's toe doesn't have an extra patch on the side, it's just got a thin front patch (if that makes sense?). Unless, maybe they did a version where it was different? Not 100% sure either way.

I had a pair of sand colored vortexes with red accents when I was in high school. I ended up getting blue ink pen on them and donated them. Argh. Regrets. (lol)
