UNIFORM | DIY Tretorns


Tretorn sent me a pair of classic white-on-white Nylites ($60) complete with a decorating kit for The Nylite Project. I used blue fabric dye and switched out the laces. I'm not a skilled DIYer, so believe me when I say fabric dye on shoes is really easy (and kind of fun!). Also, Nylites are really really comfortable.

I LOVE Tretorns. They're one of the first pair of shoes I got my kids. Love what you did with the DIY. Super cute.

OMG this is genius. Can you please expand on the dyeing process (i.e. how'd you avoid dyeing the inside?) and what brand you went with?

I just followed the directions on the Dylon Permanent Fabric Dye box, it was super easy. The dye only stains the canvas part of the shoe, so it effortlessly leaves the logo and insides white. Pretty cool!

Very cool. I just tried my hand at dying yesterday for the first time (fake for a puppet I'm attempting) with pretty mixed results. It was a brand that comes in powder form, and I didn't realize that when you rip open the packet a fine film of magical dark blue dust will settle over everything in the bathroom, and will be invisible until activate by water drops. What a mess! But I had fun, and now I know what to look out for next time. What I'm saying is, you may say it's super easy, but still, mad props to you for doing such a great job!

I have a pair of these in white/peacoat and I've had a handful of middle-aged people sort of reminisce over them. Such classic shoes!

I really like the laces you added. Very original.
Could you wear these sneakers all day? I'm looking for a pair to take on my trip to Germany to meet up with my son to do a Beer tour next month. I am trying to put together a packing list. Light and small, for trains.
But of course with a Class Tomboy Style.

Maybe you could do a Grid for us Tomboy Style travelers?! Again love your blog, a real pleasure every day!

Ah, such memories. I spent my earliest decade watching my mother and my fabulously chic aunts wear tretorns and I spent the next decade wearing them myself. I can't tell you how overjoyed I was when I was big enough to get my first pair. I wore out so many pairs but my most coveted pair were white on white leather. I wish they still offered the leather and these newer versions don't quite seem to be of the same quality as the originals but I still adore them and ordered the kiddo version for my 3 yr old. Love your dyed blue version...
