UNIFORM | White after Labor Day

Yesterday I scored a white smoking jacket by The Row at a sample sale in Culver City. It got me thinking about wearing white year-round. Growing up in Chicago and living on the East Coast, it seemed out of the question, but in L.A. people seem more hip to wearing white all year-round. I know Garancé Dore's with me, ditto on Kirsten Dunst and Julia Leach of Chance who wears white jeans all year; but what do you think? Is white an all-season color now?

Yes! Wearing white jeans all year is chic.

Oh yes. I've been ignoring the 'no white after Labor Day' rule I learned the rule existed.

Oh my word, that outfit is perfection. So elegant and crisp. And I want that blazer!

I can definitely see white being a winter sartorial color, so long as the clothes in question are strong, structured pieces. Anything frilly or airy would look too summery and therefore out of place.

Depends how it's done: I think if you play with textures and different, thicker fabrics it can work. However, wearing it with pastels or bright colour blocking would scream summer for me. The best is a monochrome white/black look, and I think that is a great way to wear white all year round. Ditto with pastels: if you pick one pastel and wear all black on the rest of your outfit, I think it looks great in winter.

White wool, denim, shirts are all seasonless. Even shoes if you put it together right.

And wow--great sample sale! Where did you hear about it?

I heard of it through my friend Dana who is the L.A. editor of PureWow.

i began to shun this rule around age 9. white's a wear any way, any where neutral!
