UNIFORM | Hermes + Vans

I couldn't help but re-post this photo from the always spot-on blog, Miss Moss; my head nearly exploded when I saw it. It's not an official collaboration, just a custom project made from vintage Hermes scarves. Insane. Right!? I'm kind of glad they're a custom one-off, because if they were for sale, I might do something impulsive—and I have a feeling they'd be up there in price. :)

I could only see the title of the post, while the page was downloading. I had chicken skin and first day of school butterflies, just imagining what I would find. Of course it's obsession time now. This never ends well....for everyone around me, who I will now drive crazy about these divine shoes. It gets me thinking...

Lizzie, I have a friend who is Navajo, and we've spoken about these kinds of things before. I do believe he would consider this offensive... but it can be hard to know where to draw the line. This blog post and its comments provide an interesting discussion on Native American inspired fashion: http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2010/04/13/american-indian-is-in/ I hesitated to say anything in the first place, because I'm sure that the designers behind this shoe as well as you and anyone else who have blogged about it mean no disrespect. But I do feel that the subject should be brought up.

I love this blog, BUT there are a number of problems with using Native American imagery as if it is a thing of the past. Too often, images of indigenous men and women or objects of their daily life are used as if they are public property, much in the same colonial tradition that their people were systematically exterminated and made to live in squalor on their own homeland. I ask that, especially in the world of fashion, photographers and designers take the humanity of their subjects and inspiration into account.
