NOISE | The Weight

Looking to listen to holiday music today, but already "fatigued" from the classic tunes (uh oh), I wanted something not totally off topic, but also not anything you'd here in any retail establishment in America right now. The Weight by The Band makes the perfect fake Christmas song. I mean, it is about a traveler's visit to Nazareth (ok, Nazareth, PA., but still the name of Jesus' hometown), which means it's practically Deck The Halls. And the real gift is the 1976 version from The Last Waltz which features the Staple Singers sitting in.

Nazareth was Nazareth, Pennsylvania, the home of Martin guitar; Luke was former Hawks guitarist Jimmy Ray "Luke" Paulman; Anna Lee was an old friend from Turkey Scratch; and Crazy Chester was the cap-gun toting self-appointed sheriff of Fayetteville.

An all time favorite song of mine....as I also enjoy your blog too

I love this version for a lot of reasons. Perhaps one is if you listen closely, at the ed of the song Mavis whispers "beautiful." And she was right. It was.

I bet those boys thought they'd died and gone to Music Heaven--Miss Mavis is still pretty divine.

I miss Levon Helm. And the Band. And those days of possibility.......thanks for this.

RE: to Georgia...I don't like Anon very much myself but when it comes to Levon and Ronnie Hawkins I have to go that way, because of my relationship with them and I don't like to be trolled because of comments.
The weight was a great post and "Luke" was one of the greatest rock n roll guitarists that no one ever heard of ....if anyone is interested here he is along with a 19-year old Levon and 26 yr old Ronnie Hawkins...notice the "Hawk" moon walking!
