SCENE | Departures & Arrivals

Photo of Mick and Bianca Jagger at London Airport (now Heathrow) by David Stroud, 1972.

When we think of air travel in the 20th century, stylish images of well-heeled passengers flood our minds. Today, when I think of air travel, I immediately think of dressing strategically. Here's a look back at some tomboy style in the departure and arrival terminals decades before TSA had its way with our outfits. And in case you missed it: the Tomboy Style x Paper Chase custom luggage tags based on airline tags of the 1960s.

The last time I flew, I went straight from work and was wearing an oldish tweed skirt from JCrew that has gold threads running through it. I was stopped because on the scanner - the agent pointed the image out to me - I looked like I had mini-explosions popping up all over my lower half. Uncomfortably intimate yet public searchings of my person followed. Next time: jeans and a t-shirt.

I think we have to remember that all of these folks flew first class, which elevates your encounter with the holdings in your closet. Your inclusion of people of color, and an inspiring athlete, made my morning.
