1. Practice steps 2-7 on a tee shirt you don't care about. Then you'll know how much to cut, what's too revealing for you, what looks right for your body.
2. Flatten the tee on a smooth surface.
3. Fold tee in half
4. Line up shoulder seams and the hem.
5. Get the sharpest pair of scissors you have otherwise you'll see cut marks. Amy, being a pro stylist, buys hers at the Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya in Little Tokyo, then takes them to knife sharpener.
6. Decide where to cut (use the practice tee as a guide) or start your cut roughly .5 to 1 inch under the sleeve stitching. Your brassiere may show, so be certain you want it to show or don't and cut accordingly.
7. Throw it on, and turn it out.
*Or just cut the sleeves off and hope for the best.
Amy suggests a hero tee or rock tee be worn casually with dark denim or black skinny jeans or even a white or black tuxedo suit.
Do you guys wear rock tees? If so, how do style them?

Yes! Rock tees are my favorite. Along the years I have inherited some of my dad's super worn, soft and amazing collection. Unfortunately, some of my cutting attempts have failed and I wish I had just left them alone. Haha. Love the cut off look though :)
I love this DIY. I feel less skittish about cutting up the Joy Division shirt I got at the Fairfax market last week. Thanks TS and Amy!

Mine usually end up as pyjamas & weekend I-don't-want-to-put-anything-else-ons.
I do still have a velvet (yup, velvet) Pee Wee Herman tee that elicited a ridiculous double-take from Adam Yauch eons ago. As a result, Pee Wee achieved instant honorary member status in my concert tee collection.
Cheers,
i am so of the "cut off the sleeves + hope for the best" school of thought. cute tee, lizzie:)

I have this thing where I cut the sleeves and most of the back out of a rock t shirt - then pull the two sides of the shirt together in the back with the swatch I cut out. its pretty cool - maybe a bit overly rocker.. but i dig it...
Amazing, I like it .

This is great! I haven't done shirts like this, but I've cut out designs in a circle or shield and put them on a striped shirt.
doing this TOMORROW. or maybe tonight.
Dang, if I had super lean/cut arms like her I'd cut off all my sleeves, too! What's her secret? :)
